Recognition and ecology of plant pest species; sampling and survey techniques; pest management methods and the environmental impact of control procedures; integrated control.

  7. 11:370:352 Toxicology of Insecticides (3 credits)

Prerequisites: 11:119:101-102, one term of organic chemistry and consent of instructor

Developing and using synthetic insecticides; environmental effects; evolution of insecticide resistance; role of insecticides in IPM programs; descriptive chemistry of insecticides; metabolism of insecticides; mode of action of insecticides

  8. 11:370:355 Agricultural & Medical Acarology (3 credits)

Prerequisites: 01:119:115-116 General Biology I and II.

The goals of this course are to learn the biology, diversity and phylogeny of mites and ticks as well as the economic impact that mites have in agriculture and human health.

  9. 11:370:380 Insect Biotechnology (3 credits)

Prerequisites: General Biology I and II (01:119:115/116); Insect Biology (11:370:381).

Insect Biotechnology focuses on the technologies that have allowed us to understand insect genetics and the regulation genes and how we have utilized this to help solve problems in insect control through gene editing systems. The study of these is new and rapidly evolving. This course requires a background in genetics, biochemistry or entomology.

  10. 11:370:381 Insect Biology (4 credits)

    Prerequisite: 01:119:115 General Biology.

A survey of insects; their structure, function, behavior, evolution, diversity, and effect on agricultural production, as well as on people and animals.

  11. 11:370:403 Insect Structure and Function (4 credits)

    Prerequisite: 11:370:381 or equivalent.

Physiology and functional morphology, including response systems, sensory systems, energy utilization, transport and secretion, and renewal systems.

  12. 11:370:404 Insect Structure and Function II (4 credits)

Prerequisites: 11:370:381 Insect Biology or equivalent, 11:115:403, 404 General Biochemistry or equivalent, consent of instructor.

Physiology and biochemistry of insect systems including maintenance, circulation, energy metabolism, homeostasis, sensory systems, communication systems, and defense systems.

  13. 11:370:406 Medical & Veterinary Entomology (3 credits)

    Prerequisites: 01:119:101-102.

We will focus on arthropods (primarily insects and mites, such as mosquitoes and ticks) and the pathogens and parasites they can transmit (i.e. vector) in public and animal health. The objective of this course is to help students understand vector-borne diseases by learning principles in arthropod biology and infectious diseases, as well as the underlying ecological and evolutionary processes.

  14. 11:370:407 Careers and Professional Development in Entomology (1 credit)

Prerequisites: Research Problems in Entomology (11:370:493).

This course will provide professional development opportunities in entomological fields and prepare students for the transition to employment. The course will also cover entomological communication skills and presentation components. Students will be expected to incorporate information learned in other classes within the Department of Entomology.

  15. 11:370:409 Insect Classification (4 credits)

Prerequisite: 11:370:381 or permission of instructor.

For students interested in insect diversity and evolution. Life histories and sight recognition of major families, especially those of economic or medical importance.

  16. 11:370:414 Forensic Entomology (3 credits)

Prerequisite: 11:370:381 or permission of the instructor

Exposes students to forensically important insects by discussing their biology, collection and preservation techniques, and how the information they provide relates to criminal investigations and legal proceedings.
